Day 14 - Happy Valentine's Day at Petra

Happy Valentine's Day!

Today we finally saw Petra. 1200 meters into the siq (valley) before we saw Petra, the Rose Red City. The siq is five meters wide in its most narrow part and 12 meters in its widest part. We first saw the royal tombs, then the second class tombs, and eventually the lower class tombs, all carved in the sandstone rocks in the middle of the canyon. The Treasury tomb, symbol for Petra was hidden until almost the end of the siq. There was only a peek of its pink facade, then the siq opened wide into a sandy square, where the Treasury stood. Along the siq there are two waters channels, one for human, the other for animal. Wadi Musa (Moses' Valley) has more than 40 springs. This was where Moses found a spring according to the Bible. The road is paved in limestone which was moved from outside Wadi Musa.

Petra is more than I could have ever imagined and 10 times more beautiful. I took a picture in front of the narrow passage, later to learn from the guide that that was where Indiana Jones rode out in the movie.
